Votes are in!

The votes for the top player in the 2009 class are in! In the end, Corey Stern (6'6, ThunderRidge) and Pierce Hornung (6'5, Ralston Valley) tied at the top!

Corey Stern, who was the Most Valuable Player at the Rocky Mountain Fall Showcase for the junior game, is a 6'6 swing man that shows the ability to take it to the rack and knock down the outside shot. His junior season ended in defeat as his squad fell to Denver East in the 5A state championship. Stern is playing with Colorado Select this summer and had a very impressive showing at the Double Pump tournament recently held in Denver. Right now, Stern has received interest from several high major programs. According to Rivals.com, Stern currently has offers from Wyoming and TCU. Look for Stern's recruiting to pick up more steam as the summer season goes along.

Pierce Hornung is a player most coaches would love to have on their team. He can bang inside with bigger players, he hits the boards and he has a motor than seemingly never stops. Hornung was the best player on a Ralston Valley squad that advanced to the State 4A Final Four. With a solid showing this summer with the Colorado Chaos, Hornung should attract the attention of the mid major conferences. Right now, Hornung's perimeter play is the area which needs the most improvement in his game.

Once again, congratulations to these two young men. RMPS wishes you both the best of luck this summer!

Southern Colorado Prospect Gears Up for Summer

All he needed was one more win and Kameron Whilhite would be traveling 141 miles north of Pueblo to play in the Final Four in Boulder. It proved to be too daunting of a task as Pueblo South (23-3) fell to Broomfield in the Elite Eight.

“It crushed me because it felt like our year,” said Whilhite. “(It felt like) we could show Colorado what we can do.”

Whilhite has had no problem showing Colorado his own talents. He was recently named All-State and All-Conference for the second year in a row. Despite his personal accomplishments, his focus next year is still on his team.

“I want to make it to the Final Four and not let the game get away from us,” he said.

This summer, he will play with the Colorado Chaos 17’s Blue which is considered one of the top two AAU teams in the state. So far, Whilhite says that he is receiving serious interest from Portland, Davidson, Bucknell and Oklahoma. While he has yet to receive his first formal offer, what does he think about the possibility of a Big XII offer?

“I’ve been working for that since I was a little kid,” he said. “It would mean the world to me.”

For those interested in watching Whilhite and the Chaos 17’s Blue, they’ll be at the Hoyt Brawner April 29 through May 4.

Who is the top AAU program in Colorado?

Each year, there is a different opinion. Each year, there is a different team that rises to the top. But what are the most consistent opinions and who usually rises to the top? After looking at Alumni lists, overall team strengths and quality of the program, the Colorado Chaos AAU program has been selected as the top program in Colorado.

According to the Colorado Chaos website, the Chaos has 15 teams going from ages 12 up to 17. The compete in local tournaments like the Hoyt Brawner and May Madness along with traveling to the top national tournaments like Reebok Summer Championships in Las Vegas and the Double Pump Best of Summer in Los Angeles.

Alumni of the Colorado Chaos include current Los Angeles Clipper and former Nevada All-American Nick Fazekas, and super freshman James Johnson of Wake Forest. In all, the Chaos boasts a whopping 141 college players, 41 of whom play or have played Division 1 basketball. Local schools of choice range from mid-majors like Denver and Air Force to low-major Northern Colorado. Nationally, Chaos has sent kids to U.C. Santa Barbara, Idaho, James Madison, Providence, Dartmouth, and Washington State among others.

For the past three years, the Chaos’ top team, “17’s Blue”, has fielded some of the best talent in the state. Players on this team in the past include Garrett Fiddler (Yale), Nicholas Marinucci (Colorado School of Mines), and Justin Coughlin (Denver) to name a few. This team is consistently competitive both in state as well as nationally.

The Colorado Chaos has gone from a growing program planting seeds in south Denver as well as Pueblo, to the most recognizable program in the state. For more information about the Colorado Chaos, please visit www.coloradochaos.com, or contact founder David Matthews at ColoradoChaos@msn.com.
